	All joints in the body share some basic characteristics. Each has a lubricating mechanism (cartilage, fluid or disc) and ligaments that protect the joint by limiting motion. The illustration on the right is the usual joint. Vertebrae in the spine have discs between the bones, knees have both fluid and a disc (called a meniscus) and ribs attach to cartilage directly.&nbsp;</p>
